Abstract

This study sought to establish the effect of project scope management on performance of marine fishing projects in Kilifi County. Specifically, the study sought to; determine the effect of risk management, and monitoring practice on performance of marine fishing projects in Kilifi County. This study used a descriptive research design. The target population for this study was 123 employees in the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs in Kilifi County. There are 123 employees under Kenya Fisheries Service: Project managers (6), Sub-counties officers (18), Field officers (39), and Landing officers (Beach unit officers) (60).  Due to the small size of the population, census method was used. Therefore, the study carried out a census of 123 employees in the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs. Primary data was collected by use of a questionnaire. This study used the self-administered questionnaire approach. This study used both inferential and descriptive statistics to analyze the data with the help of SPSS software. Inferential statistics were used to test the relationship between the study variables. The study used correlation and regression analysis. Pearson R correlation was used to measure strength and the direction of linear relationship between variables. The study results were presented through use of tables.  Findings show that; was a strong significant relationship between monitoring and performance of marine fishing projects in Kilifi County (r = 0.578, p value =0.000). The study recommendations are project managers should embrace project risk management before projects are started to enable them to identify possible risk events likely to occur and be able to institute correct response strategies. Finally, the county government need to have a computerized database for storage and analysis of data collected and use participatory approaches during monitoring and evaluation of projects.
