Abstract

The general objective of the study was to examine influence of monitoring and evaluation systems on performance of education projects in  non-governmental organizations in Nairobi City County, Kenya. The specific objectives  are to examine the influence of; Monitoring and Evaluation planning, and stakeholder involvement on performance of education projects in  non-governmental organizations in Nairobi City County, Kenya. The study was guided by Theory of   transactive planning, and stakeholder theory. The target population was 49 registered NGOs implementing education projects in Nairobi County. The study target was project teams in charge of education projects in Nairobi County hence 107 respondents were the study’s target. Questionnaires were used for data collection. The pilot test was conducted with 11 project staff to represent 10% of the sample size. To establish the content validity of the research instrument of this study, the researcher consulted monitoring & evaluation professionals. Cronbach’s Alpha was used to measure questionnaires’ reliability. Questionnaires were administered through self-administered online questionnaires. For data analysis, descriptive and inferential statistics were utilized. The descriptive statistics included frequency, percentage, and mean. Findings show that; there is a very strong relationship between monitoring and evaluation planning and project  performance (r = 0.828, p value =0.001), a very strong relationship between monitoring and evaluation stakeholder involvement and project  performance (r = 0.838, p value =0.001). The study recommendations are; management should effectively plan for the M&E and clearly outline the roles of every project team member, the organization should improve on the staff capacity to ensure that they are conversant with the M&E practices and systems
