GREEN SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AND PERFORMANCE OF MANUFACTURING FIRMS IN NAIROBI CITY COUNTY, KENYA

Abstract

The aim of the study was to examine the effect of green supply chain management practices on performance of preference groups in the manufacturing firms in Nairobi City County, Kenya. The specific objectives are waste management and sourcing on performance of small and medium enterprises in the manufacturing firms in Nairobi City County, Kenya. The descriptive research design was employed. The population of this study was 1002 procurement, production, and finance managers in the manufacturing firms in Nairobi. Stratified random sampling was used 285 respondents. Data was collected using questionnaires. A pilot was conducted with 28 managers representing 10% of the sample size.  The study used content and construct validity. Reliability was tested using Cronbach’s alpha Coefficient. Data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics and tabulated. Results show that there is a strong significant relationship between waste management and performance of the manufacturing firms (r = 0.858, p value =0.001), a strong significant relationship between sourcing and performance of the manufacturing firms (r = 0.929, p value =0.000). The recommendations are that firms should also procure updated waste collection tools and equipment to enable them collect waste in an environmental friendly manner, the firms should keenly conduct an internal needs analysis, conduct an assessment of the supplier's market, collect supplier information then develop a sourcing/outsourcing strategy and negotiate with suppliers and select the winning bid.
